What is Schools Connect?

The British Council’s Schools Connect programme builds international connections to improve education in schools.

Our projects focus on:

  • Inclusive education
  • Core and foundational skills
  • Climate change and sustainability
  • Creating international opportunities

Objective: Schools Connect aims to bring about school system development and reform for quality and inclusion.

Impact: Schools Connect supports inclusive and quality education for all learners, including for girls and marginalised children, and enhances the professional knowledge of school sector policy makers and leaders.

Approach: The programme engages with top tiers of the school sector - policy makers and school leaders (Principals and senior administrators) with an option of cascading the programme through government and private sector resources.

Enabling and Instructional School Leadership

1,500 head teachers from across Federal, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are on their leadership journeys pursuing enabling and instructional leadership practices in their schools.  After getting British Council leadership trainings, head teachers are collaborating with members of their school communities on school leadership projects they designed themselves. Local British Council validated trainers are providing not only local trainings but ongoing mentorship and oversight. A special focus is on the participants of the Newly Merged Districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and those of South Punjab. This is made possible through collaboration with the education departments at both the federal and provincial levels.

Technical assistance to Government Partners

Schools Connect is designed to respond to demand from Pakistan for connection to UK expertise on key educational themes and facilitating these connections through policy dialogue, advocacy and technical assistance. Through our Schools work, we engage with education policymakers to explore effective practices from other countries and help head teachers and teachers to bring an international perspective to the curriculum. This supports all young people to build the skills, knowledge and attitudes they need to respond to global challenges and develop international understanding, now and in the future.

National School Leadership Standards

We provide technical assistance to government partners on School leadership Standards. British Council in collaboration with Federal and provincial ministries of Education in Pakistan have co-designed the National Standards for Head teachers and Principals, providing a road map to support and challenge them to achieve high leadership standards in their schools. The standards are for all aspiring and serving head teachers and principals across Pakistan.
