Target language: Numbers and phrases for playing games

In this number-themed lesson from the British Council Teaching English website, the students will listen to a story about record breakers and play a board game.

Students start by playing a game where they listen as the teacher calls out numbers and cross out the numbers they hear. Then, the teacher tells them a story about record breakers.

They listen to the story to find what the numbers mean in the story. Finally, they play a game of snakes and ladders to practice numbers in a fun context. This lesson is particularly useful because the topic of numbers is an important one which will be re-visited throughout the course.

Listen to three teachers talking about how they would adapt this lesson for a specific location, for a class with low resources and for a large class:

You can access the story from the lesson here or the Snakes and Ladders board game.
